A Study across 27 Indian States Stresses the Need to Control Various Health Issues

A recent study conducted by ICMR-INDIAB across the nation highlighted the need to have control over various health parameters impacting the quality of life and mortality. According to the paper published in the Lancet-Diabetes and Endocrinology, only 7% of 5,297 Indians with diabetes can control their sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol targets.  

Anjana, lead author, and Managing director of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Speciality Centre who was a part of the research stated that the study used data for population distribution, and socio-economic factors while for outcome assessment, good glycaemic control, blood pressure control, LDL cholesterol target were used. Out of 4834 people 36%, 48%, and 41.5% people were able to control their sugar level, BP, and Cholesterol respectively.

She added that the study highlighted the need for follow-up as those who come for regular follow-ups have 50% fewer chances of developing diabetes-related complications. Also, education along with attendant conditions, and accessibility are important in improving the situation.
